Movie Clip Wednesday: Sports Movie

Well folks it's time for another weekly installment of Movie Clip Wednesday, hosted by Milk River Madman If you wish to play. Post a clip on your site. Try to make it 3 minutes or less, then stop by MRM's site say I'm up, with the title of your movie. You can also see who else is playing. And find some very interesting and differing perspectives on a single topic. The topic for this week is: Sports Movie. Now Karl doesn't watch sports. I watch one football game a year, at a party and it has more to do with pushups and who can break down and reassemble a model 1911 the fastest, than with the game itself. A few movies I can think of that fit the topic: A League of Their Own(it was a good movie) The Longest Yard, The Knute Rockne story. Yet, I chose The Naughty Nineties not because it's a sport movie, but because it has one of the finest and funniest sports routines ever filmed. The Naughty Nineties is a 1945 film starring the comedy team of Abbott and Costello. It is significant for containing perhaps the best-known recorded rendition of the team's classic "Who's on First?" routine, as it is this version of the routine that is shown at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown.

A couple of other fun points about the movie:

The "Who's on First?" routine was intended to be much earlier in the film; Costello begins by saying to Abbott, "When we get to St. Louis...", but by this point in the film, they are already docked there.

The only baseball defensive position not mentioned in this version is right field.

The camera crew can be heard laughing in the background during the routine.

The line, "Who's on First?" made it at number ninety-one on American Film Institute's 100 Movie Quotes.

If I were to take up watching sports, this one might fill the bill:

I wish you all a Safe and Happy Thanksgiving!

Hi Karl, One of the best bits of gag scripting ever... A and C were a funny team.

body painting as a sport...Now yout talking.

Karl said...

Princess: Yes, they were.

The body painting is not the sport that's the uniform. The sport is sexy soccer.

I love it when you dig deep into the annals of film history and pluck out a vintage gem.

I will, however, return the mmmppffft favor and remain mute on the sexy soccer stuff. Looks awfully . . . chilly.

Happy MCW!

Karl said...

Moi: Thank you on both accounts. I think they probably play that sport in warm climates.

I've watched this more than once and it's pure gold. A great piece of comedic writing and I did watch it at Cooperstown as well. Happy MCW.

Wow. That second clip is right up my alley. What sports network features THAT ?!?!?

K9: That's me, keeper of the crypt.

<a href="http://sparringk9.blogspot.com> look what K9 taught me</a>

MRM: This was one of my favorite bit's as a kid, I still enjoy seeing it.

Heff: I don't know what network it would be on. I found it with YouTube's search engine by entering "sports movies"

This was a big favorite in our family (er, the who's on first, not the soccer girlz!) even better was the whole Susquehanna Hat Co routine they did. I loved them.

Classic classic classic beyond classic. And it reminds me of trying to explain the rules of baseball to my deaf English father-in-law.

YOu know, I've never seen the movie but I know this routine. Greatest baseball routine ever. And the soccer girls speaking in German reminded me of this line from the Bad News Bears:

Morris Buttermaker: Baseball's hard, guys. I mean, it really is. You can love it but, believe me, it don't always love you back. It's kind of like dating a German chick, you know?

And I'm not sure I want to know what kind of parties you go to where stripping and assemling guns is the high-light. You've got to get out more Karl. Bwahaha

Happy MCW!

Boxer: Susquehanna Hat Company WHY YOU #&$(*%%&^$#*((%*%#&_(^%#&$$^#@#^##^@#$&$%##$#@!!!!

Thanks for the link I haven't seen that a longtime.

Check your e-mail.

Moi: I asked boxer to forward it to you.

Pam: I can imagine that was difficult.

Buzz Kill: They did the routine in so many venues, radio, TV and movies.

I don't know, but it's a great line.

You should've been there the time the police showed up, after a neighbor called because she had seen us doing close order drills with M-16 and AK-47 training simulators. Once they calmed down, they had a bite to eat and went on their way. That party is always good for a grin.

26 people, bloodyhell man what are you thinking? Like boxer said there's lot of folks to help you clean up. Relax and blow the foam off of 1 or 2, while they do it.

Joanna: we used to have a saying" she looked like she was poured into those jeans" . Now I guess it should be "sprayed into those jeans".

Happy Thanksgiving all!

The formula for inserting the link is: (Your Text)
