Nice theme there Mr. Wizard. I'm not an electrical engineer but I know some things. I've actually seen conductors as big as the ones in the 2nd pic (actually cut them with a sawz all - intentionally because I lived to tell about it).
Karl, I love the sleak, fizzy monorail. Is that an electro-magnito, levitating monorail? Applied science at some of it's best .... benefits to mankind rather than the destruction of mankind.

In the second shot, the conductors on the right are capable of handling the same amount of current as the ones on the left.

Fishy: Yes, it is a Maglev. It runs on superconductors that use nitrogen instead of helium for cooling. Sciences is science. How it is applied well that's another story. The same technology is being used in an experimental rail gun. It fires its warheads without a propellant charge.
Moi: well, it sure would reduce the need for more power plants.
