Movie clip Wednesday: Winter Scene

Well folks it's time to get back to the salt mine and forget about all this holiday frivolity. We need to get down to the serious stuff our weekly installment of Movie Clip Wednesday, hosted by Milk River Madman If you wish to play. Post a clip on your site. Try to make it 3 minutes or less, then stop by MRM's site say I'm up, with the title of your movie. You can also see who else is playing. And find some very interesting and differing perspectives on a single topic. The topic for this week: Winter Scenes. There are lots of really good ones for this topic. The grizzly bear scene in Jeremiah Johnson, a couple of scenes from Outlaw Josey Wales and the Battle of the Bulge comes to mind also. But I decided to go somewhere very cold. Ice Station Zebra  is a 1968 action film directed by John Sturges, starring Rock Hudson, Patrick McGoohan, Ernest Borgnine and Jim Brown. This Cold War thriller was set in the arctic where it even in the summer its winter or at leased it was back then. This was a pretty good movie, although it did have some pretty technical failings regarding the submarine.  They don't run on the surface as depicted in the clip. Scenes in the movie or filmed on board the USS Ronquil (SS-396) a diesel electric boat launched in 1944. The underwater scenes were made using a model of a Skate class submarine the last twin screw class. The submarine in the movie was named USS Tigerfish (SSN-509). Boat 509 was diesel electric, not nuclear and was never actually built, because it was canceled at the end of World War 2. But what the heck we shouldn't let facts get in a way of Hollywood. Please enjoy!

Good Afternoon? Karl,
It is nice to see some Real "Men of Hollywood"! Regardless of the facts It was still a very suspensful and entertaining movie.

Brrrrrrrrr.

I never saw this, but remember my parents liking it. I think it was one of the few movies they saw without us.

I guess you really do know your water equipment, don't you? :-)

Happy MCW.

I read that book! An' shivered even on a hot Florida day.

An' I recall the endin'--- I thought, "oh, really? Uh-huh, sure." Think I wuz still hot under the collar from the opening, which was the most invaded I ever felt from any spy thriller.

But, now, hmmmn, could it happen that way? What say ye?

Happy MCW!

I almost went with the Bedford Incident. We were on the same page. I love this movie although I haven't seen it in a long time. My big problem with it was the flooding scenes. Those guys didn't look too cold in water that had to be in the 30s. The icepack parts of it remind me of Clint Eastwood's Firefox.

Happy MCW!

Princess: it was quite a cast. I don't always get my fact right either. And yes it was a very entertaining movie.

Boxer: if you get a chance to see it, I think you'll enjoy it.

Not as well as I think I do. I had forgotten about the early nuke boats that had hulls based on diesel electric boats, which had twins crews. (The Skate class) So I edited my statement. If you're interested you may want a stop back by.

Aunty Belle: I haven't read the book, I now plan to do so.

Could it happen apparently it did

Thank you for asking the question without which I would not have realized my earlier mistake.

Buzz Kill: Yea if you've ever stood in water that cold without protection on, it doesn't take long before you have major problems. Although having a 21 inch diameter column of water filling up your living space would have a way of getting the adrenaline flowing. The other thing they missed in the flooding seen is the immediate rise of pressure from the leak. Everyone in the torpedo room would have been at outside pressure before they started the emergency blow.

Karl you Old Salt! How'd you end up topside being such a sea dog? Isn't this the movie that Howard Hughes was supposedly watching when he died? Happy MCW.

subs dont run on the surface? then i think red october got it wrong too. Im sure, absolutely sure i never want to be on a sub. Saw this long ago and i loved it. I should see it again as hollywood rarely gets it right anymore.

MRM: i think howard hughes died of a fingernail malfunction.

Happy MCW

Moi: I'm going to take that statement to mean you liked it. Which I'm glad to see.

MRM: I sometimes think driving a desk is payback for 25 years of having entirely too much fun at work.

Legend has it he played it in a loop. It's very possible that it had something to do with the link I placed in my comment to Aunty Belle.

K9: It's Hollywood they always get it wrong. They're are not everyone's favorite ride. I'm glad you liked it.

Howdy, señor, I know this has nothing to do with MCW, but I read your comment over at Boxer's regarding your running. Have you explored Chi Running by any chance?

Karl said...

Aunty Belle: Yes and the way this day has gone, so was 05:00 this morning. I had planned to do a "Just a few things" I just ran out of time, perhaps next week. Although I have to spend most of the week in the big sleazy, using the cursed laptop.

Moi: Hola, Señora. No I had not, although looking into it. Most of the principals are very similar to methods I already use. Mid foot landing, a comfortable forward lean and maintaining column and core. Unfortunately, there's now a hinge in the column and I'm still learning to compensate for it. Of the little I have read (I plan to read more) the principles for prevention of injuries are very good. Thank you for the suggestion.

Sounds like you're doing all the right things. The Chi site may be able to give you some more pointers. Best of luck on unhinging!

I didn't play this week, but I wanted to pop by see how you're doing.

As I can't make an informed comment on running, I'll go get the coffee.

How do you take yours?

Anyone want some while I'm up?

Karl said...

Moi: There is a lot of imformation on Chi running, interesting stuff. As far as the hinging, core workouts seem to help.

Roses: Thanks for stopping by. Hope you play next week.

I just got in from a brisk run, -5C 18k wind. Coffee would be nice. I take mine black.

no MCW this week? Now I is startin' to worry youse snow stuck or somethin'>>>how was big sleazy?

Karl said...

Aunty Belle: No I wasn't stuck, although the weather did make for an interesting flight schedule. It's just been a very busy week.

As far as New Orleans can't say I'm too fond of it.(Not that I'm fond of any city) It's mystique is overdone, it's expensive and there's a patina of filth on everything that no amount of tax dollar spending will make go away.
