Mute Monday: Redshift

Stop by The Troll Report to say Hi and see Red, with more Mute Monday folks.

Remember Wednesday is the next Cullinary Throwdown. Put together a recipe using beef and or bean. Stop by and say I'm up, in the comments and we'll come around to check you out. Our Throwdown judge extraordinaire Moi from Bite the Apple, will pick our winner!

You're making me want to pull out my old Astronomy text book and look these guys up! I love it when you go all "sciency" for your Mute.

I'm for the food challenge! Can't wait to see what everyone comes up with.

Pretend I know nothing about astronomy and telescopes. Wait, you don't need to pretend. I think these guys (and it's hard to tell if any are redheads) have something to do with detecting red light waves out in space, enabling us to see farther out? I didn't Wiki this so this is a real question. If you're not careful, I'm going to learn something.

Happy MM!

Red Shift is also a Marvel Comics super villain! Sorry.

It's amazing to me, how science moves the world along in just these kinds of leaps and bounds of imagination, brilliance, and focus. Too bad our news these days focuses more on the moronic rather than the scientific.

Why just this morning I was contemplating whether or not there were redshifts in the (z=10.1) range out there or if (z=7.5) was the limit. But then I was distracted by shiny objects.

Happy Mute Monday!

ohmigosh--youse a stargazer extraordinaire!

Hubble an...Hippolyte. Well, iffin' yore names was hippolyte ya might have discovered somethin cosmic too--I mean, a name like that takes ya places.

Karl, since youse up on all this wild science that is mindblowin' can ya give us a post on string theory? I sat on a plane (more a puddle jumper) wif an Iranian ex-pat professor at UCLA who unglued mah mind wif hadronic whirly-gigs, super symmetry and EPSATR stuff. I ain't been the same since. Whish't I could recall his name--

I'se a lot happier jes' gazin' on the beauties ya shared wif' us here.

Happy MM!

Boxer: "sciency" Ha I love it!

Neither can I, glad you're in it.

Buzz Kill: Their work enabled the theory of and the proof that the universe is expanding.

Moi: The Herald of Galactus, now there is science for you.(I had to look it up)

Yes, but it's hard to keep them home ignorant and placated, if taught to think about what's important.

Troll: This is why when my wife asks " what are you thinking" my first answer is do you really wanna know?

8.2 has been observed, 10.1 is theoretically possible.

Aunty Belle: That's a tall order with the sharp minds around here it might be like the student preaching to the teacher.

Watching the parade across the night sky is the best part.

I will have to remind myself to put up a recipe.

For just a moment there, I thought you were going to do it all without a speckle of red at all!
A feat and a half, I'de say, considering red's wide wave.
Still, great group.
These are the guys who stared out the window through-out school and yet, became the leading edge in space discovery. I KNEW I should have stuck to my guns with daydreaming!
Happy Mute Monday, Karl!

you're making me want to buy a telescope! Happy MM Karl. I loved these. And, I'll be up on Wednesday with my foodie entry!

This one is again way over my head. Glad you enjoyed hte kitty video, feel free to steal away, buddy. Happy MM.

Jaquie Sue: I'm glad you think so.

K9: Hardly a professor, it's one of the things I do for fun. The fellow smoking a pipe is the telescope's namesake.

Kitty: I'll remind you. It's tomorrow. So put some beans in a pot stir until they're nice and hot, add some beef, pour in a cup. Then stop by here and say I'm up.

Boneman: Gee, I wish I would have thought of that, could have done it with no red it all. If they gave grades for daydreaming I have my PHD.

Kym: It's a great way to spend evenings. Although unless you have a lot of money the Internet is one of the best ways to stargaze. Looking forward to your entry.

Pam: Thank you I did, by now that video has likely hit that e-mail addresses of an untold number of people. You will probably get it back someday.

Buzz Kill: To answer your question better. Photo 1-5
Hippolyte Fizeau: worked with the Doppler effect and realized it was applicable across the entire spectrum.
William Huggins: help to define spectrum analysis
Walter Adams: first used the term "Red-shift
Vestio Slipher: observed and documented Redshift.
Edwin Hubble: Made the math work.
