No worries. The way I fish is called the NoCatch Solution. Bwahaha

I've actually never heard of the term "ByCatch" so thanks for hipping me to it. This is definitely becoming a bigger problem with pollution and more pressure on fishing areas.

Happy MM!

Great pics and really interesting choice. Irresponsible anglers annoy me.

Surprised Gill-Netting is that low.

Happy Mute Monday!

Buzz Kill: I'm right there with you on the nocatch, lowcatch team.

Most of the legitimate fisheries really are trying to work toward solutions to prevent it.

On the other hand, some of the pirate fishing ships could care less. As long as they fill their holds, they don't care what they kill.

Troll: their shortsightedness is what amazes me. The thought that you can just take and take and take.

As I understand it, Gill netting and Purse Seine are where most of the successful reforms have been implemented.

karl, youre right. there are all kinds of responsible fishing practices that are applied -by western nations in particular. however, we have massive eastern nations with large hungry populations -which means political pressure. they will never adhere to treaties or best practices. Think of japanese whaling for example. Good and thoughtful MM!! have a great one.

My favorite MM of the day.
Great job Karl. Happy New Year!

Good Afternoon, Karl!

I totally side with everyone here today. It makes the rules for fishing for the responsible people much more strict and costly. meh.

Happy mm. (and that was a big ole crappie I caught!)

The top pictures remind me of going to visit science centers when I was in junior high school and seeing all of the aquariums.

Much as I love sushi, shrimp, tuna, etc. I have decided I will no longer eat any fish that's caught in the sea. Plenty o' brook trout and catfish around here por Moi. Happy Mute Monday!

Being a vegetarian that does eat fish, I'm conflicted about the entire subject and this has given me food for thought (bad pun??)

Nicely done. Happy MM.

K9: the Japanese treatment of marine mammals is terrible I will agree with you on that. It's carnage for culture.

Bycatch is the destruction of the entire food chain. Unscrupulous and ignorant people destroying a sustainable food supply.

The root of the problem is that we keep making more people.

Fishy: Why thank you. Oh and you're right being bumped in open water, whether by porpoise or shark, it will get your attention. I've experienced both the porpoise hurt more.

Kym: Yes, it does.

Did you eat the Crappie or release it?

Rage: I've been to some aquariums that have very informative displays on the practices of commercial fishing. I guess the question is; is anyone getting the message.

Moi: I'm likely being selfish, but I haven't made that jump yet. Sushi and fish are a major portion of my diet. If I buy it, I try to buy from reputable suppliers that practice sustainable fishing.

Boxer: I have known vegetarians that eat fish. No need to be conflicted purchase it from a reputable source and enjoy.

Too cool, Karl.

I jes' heered how some fella on Lake Michigan wuz runnin' bow fishin' tours to git all them carps thas' on the loose.

Happy MM!

Karl said...

Aunty Belle: The fella better have a whole lot of arrow's. Those carp have taken over the Mississippi and it looks like they're gonna make it into the great lakes, regardless of the millions of dollars the government has spent to stop them.

Great pics. :)

I knew the bottom trawling was bad. I didn't know shrimping was that bad. Thanks for the info.

Karl said...

Vixen: Thanks, I must have missed you stopping by.

Gadfly: It doesn't have to be. The last shot shows how small the by-catch can be using best practices.
